The Malawi Law Society will hold its Annual Conference and Annual General Meeting from 21st to 24th March, 2024 at Sunbird Nkopola, Lodge in Mangochi under the theme “Interrogating the Malawi Electoral System Towards 2025 General Elections”.

The guest of honour at the Annual Conference is the Chairperson of the Malawi Electoral Commission Honourable Justice Dr. Chifundo J. Kachale. The papers to be presented at the conference will attempt to answer one central question, “how can the legal and political system be exploited to improve the life of the ordinary voter?” The line-up of presenters includes scholars, legal practitioners, academics, researchers and social commentators. The presenters at the conference includes, among others, Dr Henry G. Chingaipe, a Political Scientist specialising in the Political Economy of Governance and Development; Dr Kizito Tenthani, an inter-party dialogue facilitator with over 15 years of experience, working exclusively with political parties; Dr Bernadette Malunga, a Senior Lecturer from the University of Malawi and Mr Khumbo Soko, a private legal practitioner and one of the legal practitioners in the 2020 elections case.

The upcoming general elections in September 2025 is an opportunity to rediscover and restate the collective will of the people of Malawi and redirect their hopes and dreams for the development of all against the multi-dimensional crises and challenges besetting the progress of the nation. The legal profession has a settled role in the realization of the desires of the people of Malawi. The Society’s 2024 Annual Conference shall therefore assess and evaluate the readiness of the legal framework and electoral system and recommend any improvements ahead of time if the September 2025 General Elections are to deliver the constitutionally expressed collective will of the people of Malawi to be a developed nation under the rule of law.

Participation at the Annual Conference is open to members of the Malawi Law Society and the general public. Charges for the Annual Conference are as follows: For Malawi Law Society Members; MK350,000.00 for physical participation and MK250,000.00 for virtual participation.
