Gender, Child and Disability Rights Practice Division Emerges as the Most Active Practice Division in the 2022-2023 Practice Year

The MLS created Subcommittees and Practice Divisions to help the Executive Committee in achieving the overall objectives of the MLS. The Practice Divisions focus on specific areas of practice and shed appropriate light on special areas of interest for the profession. These fall under the Legal Practice Committee within the structure. In the 2022-2023 the MLS had 12 Practice Divisions yet one of these 12 outshined the rest. Under the Chairmanship of Alexious Kamangira, a passionate human rights lawyer, the Gender, Child and Disability Rights Practice Division emerged the most active Practice Division in 2022-2023 practice year. Between June, 2022 and December, 2022, the Practice Division participated in and undertook a number of activities that made the MLS to be very visible in the human rights arena. On 13th June, 2022, members of the Practice Division Participation in the launch of the 2022 International Albinism Awareness Day at Mpira Stadium, Blantyre.

On 14th June, 2022, its members participated in the commemoration of the International Albinism Awareness Day at Mpapa Full Primary School ground, Traditional Authority Somba in Blantyre. The Division mounted a pavilion and provided free legal services to members of the general public that graced the occasion. The Practice Division also published an article in the Times Newspaper titled “The Power of Self-Advocacy in Countering Myths About Albinism”. Finally, it participated in a TV Programme on MBC TV on the rights of people living with albinism.

The Chairperson of the MLS, Patrick Mpaka, commended the Practice Division for its commitment to advance the cause of the MLS through the Division.
